ATN PS22-3P Gen 3P, Day/Night Vision Rifle System Review

ATN PS22-3P Gen 3P, Day/Night Vision Rifle System Feature

  • Day/night vision system that gives day scope night vision capabilities
  • Mounts directly in front of daytime scope for near-instant functionality
  • Individually tested and aligned on optical scale to provide perfect alignment
  • Multicoated all-glass optics; uses latest in image intensifier technology
  • This item is prohibited from export outside the US
Representing the latest advancement in night vision optics, the ATN PS22-3P gives your daytime scope night vision capabilities in a matter of seconds. Just mount the PS22-3P directly in front of your daytime scope: no shift of impact, no need to re-zero or change your eye relief. As soon as the PS22-3P is in place, you'll be able to see animals, people, and other objects just as clearly after dark as in the afternoon. Note that precision optical alignment is essential for a front sight system to work properly. That's why each PS22-3P unit is individually tested and aligned on an optical scale by ATN's engineers to provide perfect alignment. And thanks to the multicoated all-glass optics and the latest in image intensifier tube technology, the day/night system produces outstanding resolution.

The PS22-3P offers several mounting options for your weapon. The unit comes with a quick-release mount, but is also compatible with an optional 7/8-inch weaver mount and several optional scope mounting systems (all sold separately). Finally, the PS22-3P comes with multiple light suppressors for different lenses. Other details include a fast catadioptic front lens system; a large 21 mm output window; and an automatic brightness control. The PS22-3P--which runs on a single 3-volt CR123A battery--carries a two-year warranty.

How Night Vision Works
All ATN night vision devices consist of several main parts: an objective lens, an eyepiece, a power supply, and an image intensifier tube (photocathode tube). The devices function by gathering existing ambient light, such as starlight, moonlight, or infrared light, through the front lens. This light, which is made up of photons, goes into the photocathode tube and is converted into electrons. Next, the device amplifies the electrons to a much greater number through an electrical and chemical process, and then hurls them against a phosphorous screen that changes them back into visible light. The image will appear through the eyepiece as a clear, green-hued, amplified re-creation of the scene you were observing.

ITT Pinnacle Image Intensifier Tube
The PS22-3P is equipped with an ITT Pinnacle Image Intensifier Tube. These industry-leading tubes use a gated power supply to provide truly outstanding performance in high-light or light-polluted areas, such as urban environments. The ITT Pinnacle works by eliminating the "halo" effects that people often associate with night-vision devices in cities, where random street lights were often an issue when using early-generation night goggles. Night vision units with Pinnacle tubes have a typical resolution of 64-72 lp/mm and a typical signal-to-noise ratio of 24.

How Far Can You See?
There are many different variables that can affect the distance you see with a night vision device. First, what are you trying to see? Are you looking for another boat on the water or are you looking for a rabbit in the woods? The larger the object, the easier it is to see. Plus, are you trying to see details (commonly called "recognition range"), or are you just trying to see if something is there? Maybe you will see just the movement, but won't be able to determine 100 percent who are what it is. This is called "detection range." Another variable is lighting conditions. The more ambient light you have, the better and further you will be able to see. You can always see further on a night where the moon and stars are out than if it's cloudy and overcast. ATN typically states that you can tell the difference between a male and female or a dog and a deer at about 75 to 100 yards. However, if you were looking across an open field and there was a half moon out, you could see a barn or a house 500 yards away.

The ATN PS22-3P System is an attachment for a Daytime Riflescopes with 1x Magnification that converts a Scope into a high-quality very accurate Night Vision Weapon Sight. The ATN PS22-3A mounts in front of a Daytime Scope. Re-zeroing of the Scope is not required. The ATN PS22-3A comes standard with 7/8" weaver mount. There is also Adapter for ARMS quick release mount and optional Ring Adapter allows to mount unit onto the objective of the Day Scope (25...62mm diameter). The IR Illuminator can be mounted onto the optional Picatinny Rail. The ATN PS22 utilizes a 2nd+ Gen. or 3rd Gen. Image Intensifier Tube. This ingenious setup allows the shooter to go from day to night in less then 30 seconds without tools, without changes in eye relief and remain zeroed all around the clock. The ATN PS22-3A is a complex optical-electronic system. The Night Vision Device contains an Image Intensifier Tube assembly with an integrated high voltage power source and the three volt battery housing.
